Format and points
This format is the one that organisers will generally
follow. It is not fixed or rigid and there may be variations
to suit the approach of individuals.
1. All fencing for cadets and juniors to be electric.
2. All fencers to have one or two rounds of pools, the
result of which will be used to seed for the subsequent
direct elimination. The exception here will be that for
Youth A and Youth B fencing will be in pools throughout.

How do competition work?
Competitions start with one round of pools followed by
direct elimination. In the pools the fencers are sorted
into groups of approx. 5-7 competitors, depending on the
number of entries. Each fencer competes against every other
member of the pool in a bout to 4 hits (YouthA&B) and up to
5 hits older children. There are also time limits so if a
bout exceeds the time limit the decision may go to the
fencer with the greater number of hits so far. The pool
system ensures that all competitors get a reasonable number
of boots. Without pools it would be possible to travel miles
to a tournament, get all psyched up, and then get knocked
out in the first round. Very demoralizing! It also prevents
the two best fencers meeting in the early stages of direct
elimination the seeding system tends to keep the better
fencers apart until the quarter- or semi-final stages.
For
every competition children get the points:
1st
place -12 points
2nd place 10 points
3rd place (in fencing there is joint 3rd
place) 8 points
5-8 place 4 points
9-16 place 1 point
In the
end of the year (in May) by results of competition during
the year we will get know the best fencer from each group,
who gets a special trophy.
Well
done to all guys!
Next competition is in March (see IFF website)
Pembroke Fencing Club thanks all volunteers, who gave up
their time to help
Organise and to referee the competition!
Keep up the hard work and stay positive!

The parents guide to competitions continued |
Tips for fencers
1 Warm up thoroughly before your first bout and again if
there is a gap of more than about 20 minutes between bouts.
2 Remember Fencing Etiquette. Salute your opponent and the
referee at the beginning of the fight and shake hands at the
end.
3 When you are not fighting, stay near your pool. Fights can
finish very quickly, and referees get annoyed when fencers
vanish!
4 If you dont understand a decision, ask politely for the
referee to explain it, but dont argue.
5 At the end of the pools, check the pool sheet to ensure
that your results are recorded correctly. Its much easier
to sort out mistakes if they are picked up immediately.
6 Try not to show excessive pleasure on winning a hit or
bout, or bad temper on losing one. Throwing down masks or
swords is considered very bad sportsmanship. |
Tips for parents
1 Check the age categories carefully.
2 Take plenty of drinks. In all the kit, fencers get hot and
children dehydrate quickly. Avoid fizzy drinks.
3 Some fencers eat lots at a competition, others feel too
nervous. Lots of chocolate and sweets are best avoided, but
bananas, dried fruit and cereal bars provide energy and are
not too messy.
4 The time shown on the application form is for check in.
Fencing usually starts 15-20 minutes later, but if you are
not there for the check your entry will probably be
scratched.
5 Take a good book. You will spend lots of time sitting
around! Folding chairs are also popular.
6 If your child fences foil or sabre, and you are new to
fencing, ask someone to explain the Right of Way rule.
Inexperienced parents can get upset when their childs light
comes up before their opponents but the hit is given
against them!
7 Wear trainers or similar. Many venues dont allow outdoor
shoes in the sports hall.
8 Keep younger children away from the action.
9 Whilst the organisers of each individual event make every
effort to ensure that the competitions are safe and secure,
the responsibility for the welfare of the child remains with
the parent or nominated responsible adult (acting in loco
parentis). If, as parent or coach, you decide to leave
children in your care at an event for the day please ensure
that the organisers are aware of the responsible adult that
is looking after your care.
10 Enjoy! |
